Interviewing Advice – Some things not to do…

Throughout the course of my career I’ve had the opportunity to conduct quite a few interviews. Being on the other side of the table gives you quite a different perspective when it comes to interviewing.

My favorite interviewing experience happened while I was working for an online essay checker company. The interview was going good, and then one of the interviewers asked the applicant a “hard” question. He looked at us, thought for a second, and then stated, “I have an answer to that one. Just a second.” He proceeded to open up the notebook he brought, flip through the pages, and then, when he finally found what he was looking for, he read us the answer he had prepared.

Throughout the course of my career I’ve had the opportunity to conduct quite a few interviews. Being on the other side of the table gives you quite a different perspective when it comes to interviewing.

Anyone see a problem with this? Think of an interview as a test – a closed book test. Everyone knows that you have prepared for the test. You’ve gone over questions you are likely to be asked and prepared answers for them. Just make sure that when you answer the questions in the interview that you don’t read them off a cheat sheet. That won’t impress anyone.

At another company, I was interviewing a recent high school graduate for a data entry position. The position required plenty of computer experience, so one of the questions we asked dealt with the types of software applications that the applicant is familiar with. The applicant’s initial response to the question was, “Windows.” Ok, good start. The problem came when I asked him to be a little more specific about the types of software he has used in Windows. He thought about it for a second and then replied that he was familiar with Paint. Microsoft Paint!?! The painting program that little kids use?

Ok, that wasn’t my reaction (out loud anyway). I refrained from laughing because I’ve found that applicants don’t like to be laughed at during interviews.

Make sure that your answers are relevant to the position for which you are applying. I’m familiar with Solitaire, but I’m not going to bring it up in a job interview – unless I’m applying to deal cards at a casino and even then I’d think twice about it. When you are interviewing, you are trying to show the interviewer that you are a good fit for the position and you understand what you are getting yourself into. Explaining your proficiency with Paint when interviewing for a position that has nothing to do with it doesn’t earn you any points.

So, what have we learned? When interviewing, remember two things. First, make sure that you prepare for the interview, but NO CHEAT SHEETS! Second, make sure that the answers you give during the interview are relevant to the position for which you are applying. If you don’t know how a question relates, ask!

Strange Questions During Job Interviews

Finally, you created a professional resume and you were invited to the first interview. The majority of job seekers already know that questions that may appear during job interviews hardly ever occur in our everyday talks. “What is his most serious mistake, where would he like to be in five years’ time?” There are hardly any inexperienced candidates who would be surprised by questions like these. Although, the world turns round even with the experienced job hunter when the leader of the interview asks “what kind of animal would you like to be, and why?”

Job hunters consider this question as one of the most stupid job interview questions in the world. Different variations of this question are known, the animal may be substituted in the question by the tool, furniture, part of your body or anything else. The most shocking one is the American version that asks the candidate what make of car he would like to be. Of course, it is the year and color that interest the leader of the interview. Behind the interview questions, seeming to be stupid at the first sight there is the Metamorphoses test, worked out by a French psychologist, Jacqueline Royer, in which the motives of the examined person are tried to be mapped with the help of similar questions.

The interpretation of the selected animal, the cultural meaning of an object as it is (for example dolphin = intelligence, helpfulness) is made on this basis. The person who selects the dolphin is not inevitably intelligent and helpful, but at least he would like to be, as the test suggests. An HR specialist does not do anything else but tries to deduce the candidate’s marked personality from the cultural meaning of the selected animal or object.

More exactly, he tries to point to the fact if the particular personality suits the applied position. For example – as an HR specialist gave it away – to the question “what kind of animal would you like to be?” eagle may be good at a financial applied position since an eagle can see through everything. But “eagle” is a bad answer in a position where teamwork is expected. The worst answer is when the applicant cannot or does not want to answer. And presumably one does not get the desired job who accepting a blogger’s advice declares, “I would like to be an animal that feeds on you”.

The Interviewer Won’t Let Me Talk

Janice, a client of mine told me of a recent interview with a legal firm.  She said from the minute the interview started, he talked about himself the whole time.  She now knows that he is the managing  partner, he drives a Lexus and has an antique corvette that rarely gets out of the garage.  Intently she listend to him go on about his ski trips and exercise routine, thinking eventually she could use this information to build a rapore with him.

The opportunity to talk never came.  He only asked one question, “Why should we hire you?”  What do you think she should have done?  The interviewer was clearly conservative, and had set opinions on how women should behave.  If Janice had foribly taken control of the conversation, do you not agree he would have reacted defensively.  Sadly, in the end, he would most  likely make his decision based on the looks of the applicant, how intenlty they listened, and their resume.  Clearly a case where body language is going to play a key role.

On the other hand, should Janice want to work for a law firm that apparently lets its laywers exercise questionable practices?  A job’s a job, isn’t it?  In these hard time you can’t be choosey.  Besides, some of life’s best lessons are learned in the muddy trenches, if you can sort the dirt out.

Janice had to make a concious decision to let the interview slip away.  When you are faced with this situation, yah best be ready with a plan.  You can use “parlor” tricks like dropping your portfolio and making enough of a ruccuss retrieving it that you can interject comments about yourself during the breif hecitation that would follow your slip up.  Interupting with a simple “excuse me, but…” may show the interviewer you’re not a push over who is going to just sit there while the opportunity melts away.

Why Are The Full Time Positions Disappearing?

Why are nine-to-five jobs in the traditional sense are forced back and why the entrepreneur-style employment or other atypical employment forms are spreading nowadays? The answer is very simple.

The environmental pollution of a given company can be considered as emission of harmful substances and as it is one of the production expenses. But the cost is not paid by the firm but the society in the form of low-quality water or air, lung cancer and others. The firm makes its expense exterior. This approach got into the main stream of economics thanks to Coase and Pigou’s works. It has become the main ideological basis of environment protection taxes.

To make expenses exterior is essential for every company. Not because the company leaders are wicked, although there may be some among them, but the logic of economic life dictates it. If the company is big enough and it is superior to its partners, it can make its expenses exterior more easily. A big commercial firm can collect shelf prize for example, and a part of the sales expense can be burdened on its suppliers. Really big factories can afford that they order for shorter period of time and smaller quantities from their suppliers at favourable prices. So the big company reduces its storage expenses and the supplier itself has to maintain a big warehouse because of this, to be able to satisfy a big (probably the only) customer’s changing demands.

The companies with one or two exceptions have bigger superiority nowhere but opposite their own employees. The companies have strong economic interest in getting rid of expenses related to traditional form of employment. Paid annual holiday, notice period, severance pay and of course the accessory costs are expenses that the companies shift to others with pleasure. Nobody can blame them because of this. Why should they do anything differently from the way what heir economic interest dictates.

All this implies that the labour market turns into a more flexible one. However, flexibility means that employees’ safety decreases. All this has social expenses just as environmental pollution. Stress, stomach-related diseases, indebted families getting into misery unexpectedly. Somebody has to bear expenses, there is no free lunch. Atypical employment forms are necessary, of course. Particularly we mean those forms that leave the employees’ employee rights, for example part-time employment. The safety of the traditional employment does not suit all employees because of its constraints. For the majority it would suit very well but it is not available for everybody after all.
